How to start a Home-based Food Business in Florida. Here are the 6 Steps to getting started. Did you know you can make up to $50,000 a year from home in Florida making cottage foods ( food that is allowed by law to be made from home and then sold). So get you on the right track here is the steps and what I recommend you do to make this happen.

The one most overlooked process when you start a food business is incorporating to protect you from losing your personal property! if someone gets sick or you get into a legal issue and you're NOT incorporated as a business the liability falls on YOU!

Step 1 : Incorporate your home-based food business. This is ULTRA important and although many states don't require this specifically it will protect your personal property from your business liability. Not sure how to incorporate it? check out INCEFILE they have a very simple process that you can do online and have your self incorporated in no time. By doing this you will protect your personal property if you ever have any issue with your food products.

STEP 2 : Get food producers' insurance. This is going to cover all your general liability responsibilities. The normal insurance policy for your food is around 0 a year. But, no worries almost all insurance companies offer a monthly payment plan for you!

Step 3. Know what you can make and can not make from home. Not all food can be sold from home. Here is a small list of what you can.

  • Jams, jellies and preserves
  • Fruit pies
  • Dried fruits
  • Dry herbs, seasonings and mixtures
  • Homemade pasta
  • Cereals, trail mixes and granola
  • Coated or uncoated nuts
  • Vinegar and flavored vinegars
  • Popcorn, popcorn balls
  • You may roast and sell coffee beans

STEP 4 Create a website. Yes actually creating a website even for your home-based food business is a must in my book. You can inform your customers about your food product, and get it set for when you can sell online through your site. Not sure how to make a website there are 2 ways you can make your own through SHOPIFY or WEEBLY. I personally have used both these sites to make my own websites, and it is SIMPLE! they use drag and drop software making it very easy. If you want someone to make one for you check out FIVERR for website.
