Can You Sell Homemade Food Products online

Posted by Damian Roberti on

Damian from Marketing Food Online:. Can you sell homemade food products online and can I cook at home and sell them? The one thing you have to understand about selling food from home is this:. Number one, it's going to fall under what's known as the Cottage food laws. Cottage Food Laws dictate that there are only certain types of foods that are called non-potentially hazardous foods.

If you're selling a homemade food product from your home, you can't ship it out of the state of Texas under the Cottage Food Laws. So the trick becomes this. Do you create a website and then have a disclaimer on there that says, "Look, we are a home-based food business," and that we are under the cottage food laws? Now this is going to allow you to sell this product, but if you were out of, let's say, Texas, we do not ship our products out  of the state. Some states in California even have a license A, I believe, and a license B to sell directly to retailers and even restaurants.

You can cook products at home and you can sell them, but that's going to be a localized business. California has a really good cottage food law where they allow you under that specific B, B licensing to sell that product to another third party. There are a couple of other states that allow you to sell locally, even outside of farmer's markets. To verify this for your state, go to Google and type in "Cottage Food Law" and then the specific state that you're in. So if you're in Texas, you know, Cottage Food Law Texas, Cottage Food Law Florida, or whatever it may be.

You can definitely sell homemade food products online, but it's a little bit trickier than you may think. Some states will allow you to, if you've got the space, you can build a separate building. You'd have to check with the county and see where you live to do this.

Can I Make Food and Sell it Online

Posted by Damian Roberti on

So, can I make food and sell it online? Yes, you definitely can. There are a handful of things that you need to be aware of before you take the plunge into selling any food online. Some states will allow this to be done. You have to check what your cottage food law states.

Most states won't allow you to produce a product in a commercial kitchen and then bring it home, and then sell it and ship it online. So, you need to find out from your city or your county where you're going to get your business license. Food businesses are totally different from the world of selling other things that are not edible. If you're looking to create your own food product and then want to ship it across state lines, you have to, of course, do that in a commercial kitchen. In order to make this effective and profitable, you need to produce as much of that product that you're producing as possible.

When it comes to creating a price point for your product, you want to make sure that you understand the cost of renting the commercial kitchen, plus your packaging, labeling, and everything else that goes along with it. Fiverr is a website where you can hire someone for anywhere from $10 to $15 to even $25 just to make a great simple logo. If you're going to start selling your product online, do you sell it on an existing platform like Amazon, Etsy, or eBay? Do you create a store on Shopify, or even Weebly, or GoDaddy? I highly recommend you be in as many places as you can at once.

So, I've got my websites, maybe I'm on some of these platforms, but I'm not getting a lot of sales and traffic. You need to market it, you need to promote it. If you want to run basic, simple Facebook ads, I recommend you do that. Every product is different and you need to be careful about what type of packaging you use. If you're selling something that's a fermented item that's been sealed, you don't need ice packs.

Glass jars or glass packaging? Be very, very careful with those types of packaging. Amazon, Etsy, or eBay have their own payment processors built-in. How are you going to handle a product that is potentially damaged? Do you know how to handle either refund?

Or if you're going to rescind it, you need to be on top of your customer service. And can I make food and sell it online? I definitely want to look into it.
