Chris and Robin Sorensen, the brothers who started Firehouse Subs, were both firefighters. Their father was a firefighter in Jacksonville, Florida, for 43 years. In 1994, more than 28 years ago, they opened their first restaurant there.

They stand out from other restaurants because they steam the meats and cheeses in their Hook & Ladder subs. When you steam them, they stay juicy and don't get burned, brown, or overcooked, which can happen in other ways.

Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket Sub
When you order a Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket sub, you don't get some random barbecue sauce.
Firehouse Subs uses Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce, which is a brand I always have in my pantry or already opened in my fridge.
When you order this big, filling sandwich, you get freshly sliced USDA choice beef brisket.
The brisket is smoked with hickory for at least 10 hours and up to 16 hours to give it a deep, smoky flavor.

They put barbecue sauce, cheese, and their standard toasted sub roll on top of the beef.

Cajun chicken with a kick Sub
This sandwich is spicy because the chicken breast meat is rubbed with Cajun seasoning and then grilled.
Firehouse makes its own Cajun mayonnaise to make the food more creamy and spicy.
With sliced red and green cherry peppers, deli mustard, and onions and lettuce, you can balance out the heat.
Melted pepper Instead of cheddar or American cheese, you can choose Jack cheese.
In honor of its 25th anniversary, the restaurant came out with the Spicy Cajun Chicken sub.

I was sad that it would only be available for a short time because it had the right amount of heat without being too spicy.
I had nothing to worry about. Because this sandwich sold so well, it is now always on the menu.
Hook & Ladder
The Fully Involved version of the Hook & Ladder sub has mayonnaise, deli mustard, onion, tomato, lettuce, and a dill pickle on the side.
This hot sub sandwich has Monterey Jack cheese that has melted on top of two tasty thin slices of deli meat.

This is one of the best things I've ever eaten from the Firehouse Subs menu. The smoked turkey breast makes it taste smoky, and the Virginia honey ham gives it a little sweetness.

Fresh vegetables add bite to a toasted sub that is crispy on the outside, but a good sub roll should be soft and fluffy on the inside.

The Hook & Ladder is a great choice when both turkey and ham sound too good to pass up separately. I think this fast food sub can stand up to anything from some of the best sandwich shops in the country.

The Club on a Sub
You can get the Club on a Sub if Virginia honey ham and smoked turkey breast aren't enough meat for you.
When you can't decide what you want, this sub is one of the best things to order from Firehouse Subs.
On top of the melted Monterey Jack cheese, you'll get several slices of pepper bacon to go with the ham and turkey.
This sub is Fully Involved, which means it comes with all the toppings and a kosher pickle on the side.

I don't always want bacon on my sub, but when I do, the Club on a Sub is perfect.

Engineer
A turkey sub with smoked turkey breast, melted Swiss cheese, and all the toppings like mayo, deli mustard, onion, tomato, and lettuce makes a great lunch or dinner any time.

I love the Engineer sub because it has all of those things, but it also adds sautéed mushrooms under the melted cheese, which makes it even better.

Whether you're eating a burger or a turkey sub, Swiss cheese and mushrooms go well with both.

This is my favorite turkey sandwich at Firehouse or any other sub shop because of the way it is put together.

I like to order a large sub, like a foot-long sub, and eat it for two meals with a salad or fries to make the fun last longer.
Italian Sub
When I want an Italian sub or any kind of Italian sandwich, I like to order the Italian sub, which is one of the best things on the Firehouse Subs menu.
Genoa salami, pepperoni, and melted provolone cheese already give it an Italian flavor and a lot of meat, but the honey ham from Virginia makes the sandwich even better.
Italian dressing and a mix of Italian spices make sure that the taste is definitely Italian.

This sub comes Fully Loaded and is a great alternative to pizza when you're in the mood for authentic flavors but don't feel like eating a pie.
Stuffed Potato Soup
A classic meal is soup and a sandwich. I love to order a small Loaded Baked Potato Soup and a 4-inch cold deli meat sub.
I love potato soup, especially when it's cold outside.
Loaded baked potato soup takes it to the next level by adding a little pepper, chives, and enough onions to make it taste like homemade potato soup.

Sharp cheddar cheese melts into the soup to make it creamy and cheesy, and the pieces of bacon add a smoky, salty flavor that goes well with the perfectly cooked potatoes.

This soup is one of the best non-sandwich items I've tried from Firehouse Subs.

Sub with Sweet and Spicy Meatballs
The Sweet & Spicy Meatball sub is the hot version of the Firehouse Meatball sub, which is listed below.

In the middle of Firehouse's split sub rolls are meatballs that have been seasoned with Italian spices.

I love how this sandwich's roll is split but not completely separated. It makes it so much easier to eat than regular meatball subs.
Serving it this way also lets them cover the meatballs with spicy marinara sauce and melted provolone cheese without it running out of the sides.
They add red pepper flakes and their own brand of datil pepper hot sauce called Captain Sorensen.
Datil peppers are about 120 times hotter than jalapeos, so make sure you want the heat before you order.
The New York Steamer
The New York Steamer sub is full of two of New York's most popular deli meats. Pastrami and corned beef brisket from USDA Choice are thinly sliced and piled high on the toasted sub roll.

The sandwich tastes like a real New York deli sub because it has mayonnaise, deli mustard, and Italian dressing on it. Melted provolone cheese on top gives the dish a cheesy finish.

If you can't decide between the pastrami and corned beef brisket subs at Firehouse Subs, this sandwich is one of the best options.

The Fully Involved has deli mustard, mayo, and fresh, crisp vegetables like sliced onions and tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and a kosher dill pickle on the side.

This turkey sandwich is a great choice for a lunch or dinner foot-long that is easy to make and tastes great.

Turkey bacon and ranch
Firehouse Subs' Turkey Bacon Ranch is still all about the tasty smoked turkey, but it's helped out by a few other tasty things.

Crispy bacon gives the peppercorn ranch dressing and melted sharp cheddar cheese a savory crunch.

At the bottom, shredded lettuce, sliced onion and tomato, and mayonnaise give it a crisp, fresh taste.
If you like bacon and peppercorn ranch together as much as I do, this sandwich will quickly become one of your favorites.
Even though I could order a small 4-inch or medium 8-inch sub, I always get the foot-long and look forward to the leftovers.

Hero Sub Firehouse
The Firehouse Hero sub is for people who love meat and want everything on their sandwich.

This sub is one of the best things to order from Firehouse Subs when ham, turkey, or roast beef all sound good.

This hero sandwich has thinly sliced smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, and USDA choice tender and juicy roast beef. It also has the Fully Loaded list of condiments and melted provolone on top to tie everything together.

The Firehouse Hero is so full of meat that I usually get a small 4-inch sub if I'm in a hurry and a large foot-long if I want it to last me at least two tasty meals.

Subway Chicken Breast
One of the best things to order at Firehouse Subs is a sub sandwich that is as simple as they come.

On their Grilled Chicken Breast sub, provolone cheese is melted over strips of grilled chicken breast.
Onions, tomatoes, and shredded lettuce make a bed for the chicken on top of which it sits. These ingredients give the sub a cool, crisp, and fresh taste.
Mayo and deli mustard are two of the other Fully Involved condiments. On the side, don't forget the kosher dill pickle.

This one is for you if you want cheesy chicken and classic sub sandwich toppings.
Meatballs from Firehouse
For sub lovers like me, the classic meatball sub is a must-eat. The Firehouse Meatball sub is one of the best things I've ever eaten.
The Italian flavor comes through in the meatballs' seasoning, the Italian herbs, the perfectly balanced marinara sauce, and the melted provolone cheese on top.

This sandwich is one of the best things you can order from the Firehouse Subs menu.

You can ask for it cold, or if you want one of the best sandwiches with a lot of heat, you can step it up to the Sweet & Spicy Meatball sub listed above.

Chopped salad from Italy
If you want Italian food but don't want a sub sandwich, one of the best Firehouse Subs menu items combines Italian flavors with fresh vegetables. It's a healthy choice that's a little lower in calories than the rest.
In their Italian with Grilled Chicken Salad, the chopped cucumbers, bell peppers, tomatoes, and romaine lettuce are topped with pieces of juicy grilled chicken breast and salami.
Chopped mozzarella is a tasty addition to the salad, but the tangy bite of the pepperoncini is my favorite part.

Instead of being cut up, the peppers are still whole. You can take them out if you don't like their spicy taste, but I like to take a bite of the peppers with most bites.
