 1)

How much money does each pound or kilogram of product cost?
This isn't the only thing to think about, but the more a crop sells for, the less of it you'll need to grow to make the same amount of money as if you grew more of a crop with a lower value.

But you should also pay close attention to the costs of making it, the time it takes, and any money you might need to invest.

2) How are you going to sell the goods? Which vegetables have highest profit margin
You'll get the most money if you sell directly to customers or make products that add value.

But it's also more work to market and sell things yourself.

Once you get to a certain size, it's hard to sell all of your crops at the highest price in the time you have to grow them.

As your business grows, you may have to think about selling at least some of your products to wholesalers for a lower price in exchange for the large quantities they can buy and the ease of doing so.
3) How fast does the cycle of growth happen?
The best thing is to be able to grow a crop more than once a year.
Some of the crops we'll talk about below can be ready in as little as two weeks and can be grown every week of the year.

But crops that grow quickly often need more time and attention.

So, depending on your situation, you might do better with crops that grow more slowly but take care of themselves a bit more.

4) How are the returns?
You want something that will give you a lot of returns for every square foot, meter, or acre you give it.

This is especially true if you don't have a lot of space. If you have a bigger plot of land, it's less important, and you may want to think about other things the crop can do for you.

Also, you should think more about the value of yield than its weight.
For example, the yield of microgreens is less than that of potatoes in terms of weight, but it's worth a lot more.
5) Can you use the space up and down?
Some plants can be grown in trays stacked on shelves.

If you grow something else that can only be grown on one level, you might not be making the best use of your land.

This is especially true if you are working with a small space.

If that's the case, you could try growing mushrooms or microgreens, or you could plant them with other plants at different heights to get the most out of each square foot or acre.

6) How much work does it take to grow a crop?
This one is big. A crop may sell for a lot of money, but the price may be high because it takes a lot of work to grow. Which vegetables have highest profit margin

For example, to make 1 lb of dried saffron, you have to collect the stamens from 75,000 plants.
Also, you need to match the amount of time you have to the needs of the crop you want to grow.
If you don't have much time, you might choose to grow a crop that makes less money but takes less time to grow.
7) How much do you want to make?

Lastly, you should step back and think about what you want to achieve.

How much you need to grow depends on how much money you want to make from your farm.

This will affect where and how you sell it, as well as how much time and money you need to put into it.

Check out this video on our YouTube channel where we talk about what we think are the most profitable crops and how there are many things to think about:

Now that you know these things, let's look at some of the most profitable crops around the world:

1) Puffballs

When you think of cash crops you can grow on a small farm, mushrooms probably aren't one of the first things that come to mind.

But it can be surprisingly profitable to grow mushrooms.

Especially oyster mushrooms, which can be grown in as little as five weeks and sell for $10 to $20 per pound.

Mushrooms are a great crop for people who live in cities or who don't have a lot of extra space.

Most of the time, they are grown inside and give a very high return per square foot.

Up to 25 pounds of oyster mushrooms can grow on one square foot of land.

Best of all, they can be grown vertically in large bags that hang from the ceiling to make the most of the space you have.
Mushrooms don't last long once they are picked, and they are hard to ship across the country, so local growers have an advantage over larger commercial operations.
You can sell directly to chefs and restaurants or at farmer's markets, just to name a couple of options.
If you have more mushrooms than you can sell at once, you can always dry them and sell them that way. They'll sell for less, but you'll be able to use them for much longer.

You might find our guides on how to grow oyster mushrooms and how to set up a simple mushroom farm helpful.

If you just want to start growing mushrooms as quickly and easily as possible, you might want to buy some mushroom substrate blocks that already have spores on them and are ready to grow.
2) Microgreens

We want to talk about microgreens right after we talk about mushrooms because they are a lot like mushrooms in many ways.

Both are among the most profitable crops in terms of money made per square foot.

One thing we love about microgreens is how easy they are to grow on a large scale.

You can start growing microgreens in a spare room or basement with just 5 or 6 trays and make an extra $200 or $300 per month right away.

From seed to harvest, microgreens only take about two or three weeks, and they can often sell for more than $15 per pound.

As you grow more microgreens, you'll probably want to start using shelves.

So, you can stack up to four rows of microgreens and grow them under fluorescent lighting. vegetables have highest profit margin

With shelving, you can grow $10,000 worth of microgreens every month in the space of a typical basement or spare bedroom.
Most of the time, microgreens are grown in 10" x 20" soil-filled trays, but they can also be grown in water.
Like mushrooms, microgreens need to be sold right away because they don't last for a long time.
You'll need to sell your goods at farmer's markets or to local chefs and grocery stores to find a market. You can also sell microgreens to wholesalers if you have too many.

Microgreens can be grown from almost any regular vegetable or herb, and there are a lot of different types of microgreens that are grown these days.

We would suggest starting with common ones like sunflower, radish, and pea shoots before moving on to more unusual ones.

Because the ones we talked about are easier to grow and because people are already familiar with them, they are also easier to sell.

Microgreens are some of the most profitable vegetables to grow because they produce a lot per square foot and sell for a lot.

3) Ginseng

Ginseng is a plant that is known for its medicinal root that grows slowly. There are two main kinds of ginseng that are grown.

Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng) and Panax quinquefolius (American ginseng).

Both have been used for a very long time in traditional medicine.
There isn't a lot of clinical evidence to show that ginseng is good for your health, but early studies have shown that it helps with memory, menopause symptoms, and fatigue.
Ginseng can be used in Asian cooking. It is also found in energy drinks and herbal teas.
Ginseng is more of a long-term investment when it comes to making money from plants. Once you plant ginseng, you have to wait six years before you can harvest the roots.

While waiting for their main crop to grow, many growers sell ginseng seeds and young "rootlets."

When roots, rootlets, and seeds are added up, ginseng growers can make up to $200,000 per acre over the course of six years.
Growing ginseng on a large scale is hard and dangerous, and you need to use polypropylene shade cloth to do it.
But it can be grown on a small scale under forest cover for little or no money. In fact, ginseng grows naturally in a lot of the eastern and northern parts of the United States.
Buyers are much more interested in ginseng grown in the wild than in open fields. People think that wild ginseng is much more effective as a medicine.

True wild ginseng is getting harder to find, so "wild simulated" ginseng is a big business. That's when ginseng is planted in forests where it already grows.

If you grow trees on your farm for firewood, lumber, or any other reason, ginseng might be a good addition to your forests.

Wild-grown ginseng roots sell for between $300 and $600 per pound.
4) Lavender
We recently wanted to buy some lavender for a baking recipe, but we couldn't find it in any of the stores in our city.
We don't know if this means there isn't enough lavender on the market or if people just

don't want it.
But no matter what, growing the herb might be one of the best ways to make money from farming.
Lavender is a crop that can be used in many ways. Florists can buy its flowers either fresh or dried.
The dried flowers can also be used to make flower arrangements or wreaths, or they can be sold directly to crafters or to stores that sell craft supplies.

Lavender oil is, of course, also made from it.

It's a common ingredient in aromatherapy products, skin care products like soaps and lotions, and even herbal pillows and sachets.

We've also had the pleasure of trying lavender ice cream, which was delicious and tasted like flowers.

Check out Purple Haze Lavender Farm to see what you can do with lavender. They make more than \$1 million a year from the different lavender products they sell, even though they only grow lavender on eight acres of land.
The easiest way to make money would be to sell dried bouquets of lavender. It requires a minimal investment into equipment, labor, or time.
One acre of lavender plants can make about 12,000 bouquets each year, which can be sold for $10 or more each.

Just tie the flower stems together into bunches, hang them in a well-ventilated area for at least a week, and they're ready to sell.
Lavender plants need soil that drains well, but they can grow in many different kinds of climates.
Most of the time, plants don't need fertilizer or watering. Lavender is easy to grow from cuttings in a greenhouse.
The plants won't bloom until their second year, but after that, they'll keep growing back and blooming for at least 10 years. They grow quickly and don't get sick easily.

5) Saffron

Saffron could be the world's most expensive legal crop. At about \$2500 per pound, it is by far the most expensive herb used in cooking. Which vegetables have highest profit margin

It's hard to explain how saffron tastes, but most people say it tastes like floral honey.

Why is it so expensive? The crocus plant's stigmas, which are the part of the flower where pollen germinates, are used to make saffron.
