Sell Food Online

One of the biggest parts of e-commerce today is selling food online, so if you're looking to sell food online, you might be thinking to yourself, "How do I do that and how do I do it legally?" Are there any business licenses to sell food online? Do I need to have food business insurance to sell food online?" "Do I need a licence to sell food online?"

Yes, if you're looking to sell food online, you are definitely going to need a license to be a legitimate business and for liability purposes and tax collection, you need to make sure that you have never won a business license. You need to have a business license to sell food online because of the fact that you will be selling and transacting with customers and collecting tax. You need to remit to your state next. Next up you'll have to have licenses and permits in your city and county. What the requirements are where you live, so check with them when you begin to sell food online.

"Sell food online from home."

So, can you sell food online from home? That is a great question. You can, in a way, because certain states have what are known as cottage food laws. These are laws that allow you to sell food that you make at home locally. Many of the states have just recently changed the laws to allow you to sell food online within the state and you have to deliver them directly to the customer. You cannot ship them nor ship them out of state.

"Selling food online license"

To make sure that you're selling food online and have the right license, be sure to check with your city and county. Many of them also double check the zoning where you're located and make sure that you're in a commercial facility. Being that you're in a commercial facility, by the way, you have to be FDA-registered. That facility that either handles transports, stores, manufacturers, or ships any type of food product needs to be registered with the FDA. They don't necessarily give you a permit of any kind but you need to make sure your facility is in their system.

"Food selling websites"

So if you're looking to sell food online, there are some food selling websites that you can actually begin to sell on, which I highly recommend. Websites like Amazon, eBay, and See actually have a built-in customer base already. If you create your own website, it's a very big challenge to get traffic to your website and convert that traffic into actual buying customers. So I would recommend combining the two or even three. Make sure that you have your own website, yes, also be on Amazon, be on eBay, sell on Etsy. That's what you need to do.

"How to sell homemade snacks online"

As I mentioned above, certain states allow you to sell food online through cottage food laws, but you must deliver them in person; there are no states that I am aware of that will allow you to ship a product across state lines in the United States, but it is permitted in some other countries.

"How to sell food online in California"

With so many food entrepreneurs living in California, how to sell food online in California is a question we get quite frequently on our YouTube channel. You can definitely do it again just like any other state. You need to make sure that you have the proper business license and food business insurance policy for your food business when you're selling food online. Make sure that you're on a platform with traffic that's built in, like I mentioned, Amazon.
